Disney Buys LucasFilm

What you most likely already know: Disney has bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and stock, and there will be a Star Wars VII in the making, scheduled to be released in 2015.

Here are more details on the deal and the new Star Wars films:

1. Disney owns Star Wars, Indiana Jones and ILM (company that used to own PIXAR)

2. Disney is planning to release a three more Star Wars films, starting in 2015, and all of them will be released in 3D.

3. Fox still owns the distribution of all the existing Star Wars films.

4. So far there is an “extensive and detailed treatment” for the next trilogy.

5. A new Star Wars film will be released every 2-3 years for the new trilogy.

I can hear the collective groan of all the young adults/adults out there about there being yet another trilogy for Star Wars. I have taken part in that groan, but I understand that there’s a whole new generation of Star Wars fans that enjoy the prequels, and they’re not going to stop making Star Wars films just because the fans of the original trilogy will be angered. They’re not targeting the original fans.
As for Disney buying out Lucasfilm, it seems to be a move that was coming all along. They already have Marvel, and this fits into their plan of slowly taking over the world. I’m a little excited to see what new writers can do with Star Wars, and what happens to it without George Lucas, since he didn’t do much with the prequels. Lucas is finally moving on, and Disney continues to move up the ladder.
