Seann William Scott will star in Goon, directed by Michael Dowse, as Doug Glatt: a dim-witted outcast that beats up everything that stand in his way, and uses his “talent” to help a hockey team.
This is Scott’s most complex role to date, as he turns away from his frat boy, sex-crazed characters. Scott also does not go “full-retard.” Doug Glatt has trouble wording comebacks, and words in general, but he has a special talent in beating the crap out of people—which is a fresh change from extraordinarily fast counting or ping-pong skills.
The title “goon” is very appropriate, as it’s often used in hockey to label the muscle of the team (bash brothers sounds better, but yeah). For many, the enforcers on each team going head to head makes hockey that much more entertaining. Yes, watching the trailer will remind some of Waterboy, but this looks like it has the potential to be more.
Joining Scott will be Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Live Schreiber, Jay Baruchel, who wrote the script along with Evan Goldberg, and Eugene Levy (American Pie).
