Matthew Vaughn Good or Bad for Star Wars VII?

December 03, 2012 By Mike B

It was somewhat confirmed that Matthew Vaughn will direct Star Wars VII. The rumors and talk have been floating around about this for the past couple of days, but nothing solid yet. Jason Flemyng, who worked with Vaughn on X-Men: First Class, dropped some words on the red carpet that Star Wars fanboys, including myself, ate up.

“Me and Matt have done nine films together, so I’m sure I’ll get the call for Star Wars,” Flemyng said.

Let’s say that Matthew Vaughn was confirmed 100% to direct the first film of the new Star Wars trilogy. Thoughts? Well, he’s a very solid choice, and his filmography so far is quite impressive. His filmography includes Layercake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, and X-men: First Class. All of those films have received mostly pleased remarks from critics and fans alike.

I think he’ll do fine in the director’s chair, and there won’t be too much pressure on him because the Star Wars prequels lowered the bar quite a bit.  Vaughn does comedy well, his action scenes are solid, he’s done fantasy and he shows an appreciation for the story in all the films he’s directed so far. Michael Arndt, writer of Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine, will be penning the script.

In the end, we’ll just have to find out if he is the director, and then after that wait until 2015 to see the results of his direction. This is what’s horrible about being a film buff: anticipating all the films that will be made 2-4 years down the road.
